VR Slots - A Fad Or Here To Stay?

VR Slots - A Fad Or Here To Stay?

Slot games have evolved beyond recognition since the inception of online casino gaming. While this has enabled developers and designers to explore new gaming options, it has also meant that there’s much stiffer global competition for slot companies to contend with.

The latest of many recent tech innovations to capture the headlines in the iGaming world is the emergence of VR slot gaming. Today, we’re going to explore whether they have legs, whether they could challenge some conventional slot gaming ideas, or whether they're simply a fad, a sample of the current tech flavour of the month.

Combining Ideas & Themes

The quickest way to gauge appetite for any slot-gaming idea and market is to fuse it with an existing idea that already has a large audience. It was an approach that was a masterstroke in the early days of online casino gaming; we saw conventional games with huge popularity moving their gaming models and mechanics online.

Progressive jackpot slots were among the first casino games to highlight the significant scope and potential for iGaming companies. While the market in the early 21st century might not have reached anywhere near the levels we see today, it was the introduction of online progressive jackpot slots that first shone a light on the potential of online slots.

It’s an area of slot gaming that has adapted and changed significantly as technology has improved and other payment systems, like cryptocurrency, have begun to impact the market. Playing a progressive jackpot slot online covers a range of different themes and ideas, but the underlying mechanics of the game link a number of different machines together.

In conventional progressive jackpots, they would link a number of machines across the floor, or in local casinos, but with online options, the machines link the jackpots from a vast international audience, causing the jackpot to grow quicker, some jackpots to be much higher, and a greater yield for profit for progressive jackpot slot designers who can strike a chord with an online audience.

Mapping Important Milestones

Aside from the rise of progressive jackpot slots, there have been several other significant milestones that have shaped the direction of the slot gaming world. The history of slot machines shows that if a technological development is innovative and captivating enough and enough people get behind it, it can completely reshape the industry as we know it.

We saw it in the early days of video slots, digital reels, the removal of lever-based games, and more recently, the rise of online slots and cryptocurrency games. As casino companies scramble to find the next big tech innovation set to transform the market, could VR be the next big change we see across the world of slot gaming?

Pros Of VR Gaming

The main draw for VR gaming is that it has been backed by the might of Mark Zuckerberg and Meta since the beginning of this decade.

Even though it was a painful, steep learning curve and cost the company billions of dollars, the recent rise in some regions of VR has proved positive for the big hitters over at Meta. Smart glasses have become an unlikely success story in the world of VR, and they have been doing a lot of heavy lifting on Meta’s profit sheets.

You’d have to think that the strength of VR depends on the amount of capital Meta continues to invest in this area of tech. If they start cashing out of their investment or allocate fewer resources to developing the technology, this could prove a contagion that fuels the end of the fad—if it is to be declared a fad, that is.

VR slots offer an immersive experience for those who have a penchant for both casino slots and the latest technological innovations. Some believe that if VR is going to have an impact on casino gaming, then it will be in other fields, such as poker and roulette, where VR can mimic the casino floor, but if it does start to have a significant impact on the world of casino gaming, then you can bet that slots will benefit from it too.

The Verdict

It’s too early to say whether VR slots have potential or if they are simply a relic of the 2020s. Meta will be one company hoping it is the former rather than the latter as it grapples with finding its own voice in tech markets that operate outside the social media ecosystem.

Some have written off their VR pivot as a means to deflect from their negative headlines, but given that they’ve now been trying to make this expensive pivot for years, it’s more likely that it’s a genuine attempt to break ground in a new area of tech. However, the success of VR does not depend on its integration into the slot gaming sector.

If we were to take a guess, VR slots will likely become popular at some point, but the market's strength and popularity are yet to be determined. With AI and VR continuing to make inroads into the market, though, it’d be unwise to completely write them off as a fad.
