Bitcoin sports betting sites: What UK punters should know before they deposit

Cryptocurrency sports betting sites promise simplified registration and almost instant payments. But before betting on a match using Bitcoin or a stablecoin, it is essential to understand how transactions work and to check the site’s licence. It is also important to note that the UK’s oversight is limited.

How crypto sportsbooks differ from UK bookmakers

A traditional, licensed British bookmaker accepts credit card payments, carries out identity checks before any withdrawals are made, and is accountable to the Gambling Commission should any issues arise.

A cryptocurrency sports betting site does neither of this. Deposits and withdrawals are channelled through a digital wallet address rather than a bank account, most accounts can be opened with just an email address, and the licence is usually issued by Curaçao rather than the UK.

That is why it is worth consulting comparisons that track Bitcoin sports betting sites in terms of payout times, coin support and betting coverage in the same way that other review sites do for standard bookmakers, as these sites cover horse races, football, tennis and combat sports as usual. What changes is who monitors the operator and how far you can go before anyone asks for proof of identity.

Most sites still require identification once a withdrawal exceeds a set threshold, so ‘no KYC’ often means ‘no KYC for now’ rather than ‘never’.

Price is the main differentiating factor. Every bookmaker adds a margin to its odds, and this can vary by several percentage points between two operators quoting odds for the same match. Consequently, it’s always best to compare prices before placing a bet.

Funding an account and placing a bet

Depositing funds onto a sports betting site using cryptocurrency generally involves three steps: connecting or topping up a wallet, making the deposit, and then waiting for the site to credit the balance. It is usually also possible to purchase cryptocurrencies directly at checkout via a card-to-crypto conversion service, if no wallet has been set up in advance.

The processing time depends on the cryptocurrency chosen. A Bitcoin deposit made on the blockchain usually takes between 10 and 60 minutes and requires one or more confirmations. The same transaction via the Lightning Network, a Bitcoin-based payment service, is settled in a matter of seconds for a fraction of a penny, although only a few UK-facing sports betting sites support it for deposits and withdrawals.

Stablecoins such as USDT are usually credited in under a minute on the TRON network for a low and predictable fee, which explains their popularity amongst punters who want a fixed value between staking and withdrawal.

Once the balance is displayed, the betting options are similar to those offered by any bookmaker: odds, handicaps, totals and in-play betting on the same matches. Withdrawals work in the opposite direction, with the money returning to the wallet once the sports betting site has approved the request internally.

Bonuses and wagering requirements

Sign-up offers at cryptocurrency sports betting sites are generally more generous than the industry average. A deposit bonus, usually ranging from 100 per cent to 200 per cent on the first deposit, provides bonus funds that must be wagered before they can be converted into real money. A free bet works differently: if you lose it, only the token is lost; if you win it, the winnings are real.

More modest reload bonuses, often ranging from 50 per cent to 75 per cent, reward a second or subsequent deposit, whilst rakeback and cashback refund a portion of the margin or net losses accumulated over time.

The figure that really matters is the wagering requirement – that is, the multiple of the bonus that must be wagered before any withdrawal can be made. A practical example illustrates why this figure is more important than the advertised bonus percentage:

  • Deposit: £30

  • Bonus at 100% match: £30

  • Total to wager: £60

  • Wagering requirement: 10x

  • Turnover needed before withdrawal: £600, often at minimum odds near 1.70 a bet

Skipping that maths before opting in is how a generous-looking offer turns into weeks of required staking.

Licensing, safety, and why UK oversight is catching up

Curaçao issues the licence behind most crypto sports betting sites. Since a new national gambling ordinance came into force in December 2024, this licence is issued directly by the Curaçao Gaming Authority rather than via the former master licence system.

This is the most widely recognised regulatory framework in this sector of the industry, but it still lacks the enforcement powers and dispute-resolution authority of a licence from the UK Gambling Commission. A cancelled bet or a frozen withdrawal at an offshore bookmaker is resolved by the operator itself, sometimes with the assistance of an independent mediator, rather than by a UK regulator with the power to impose a fine or suspend a licence.

The Gambling Commission’s own guidelines make it clear just how significant the differences are. Its published position on crypto-assets warns that the anonymity surrounding certain crypto-assets, combined with limited evidence of the origin of funds, has repeatedly caused problems for licensed operators who accept them.

None of this prevents a UK resident from opening an account abroad, but it explains why a bookmaker licensed in Curaçao and one licensed in the UK are not subject to the same standards.
